Nandu Gopan

Dr. Nandu Gopan joined the MOSAIC group as a Lecturer and Senior Postdoctoral Researcher in August 2021. Since July 2026, he is the substitute Professor and acting Chair of Scientific Computing for Systems Biology at Dresden University of Technology. He is an Indian citizen, born in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

After obtaining his Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, he went on to pursue his Masters at the National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC) where he worked under the guidance of Prof. Dr. U. B. Jaydeep on the computational modeling of wear mechanisms in nanoscale coatings. He continued at NITC for his doctoral work on numerically investigating the stability of nanoscale liquid structures, which was carried out under the supervision of Dr. Sarith P. Sathian.

Subsequently, Nandu received a prestigious National Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) of the Government of India. The resulting work on modeling nanoscale electrokinetics was done at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) under the mentorship of Prof. Meheboob Alam and was awarded the SERB Merit Certificate in the Engineering Sciences category. Simultaneously, Nandu also worked on exploring and using particle simulations to study pattern formation in granular flows with a special focus on Taylor Couette flows. Prior to joining the MOSAIC group, Nandu was an Assistant Professor in Aerospace Engineering at Amrita School of Engineering, where he also taught classes on Numerical Methods and Computational Fluid Dynamics.

In the MOSAIC group, Nandu works on simulation-driven inference and transfer learning. As substitute professor, he is also responsible for all teaching and administrative matters of the chair at TU Dresden.
