Dr. Tommaso Bianucci joined the MOSAIC group as a postdoctoral researcher in October 2025. He is from Italy.

Tommaso obtained his B.Sc. in Mathematics at the University of Pisa in 2017, while working for a few years in client support and software development at a local FinTech company. He then moved on to study Computational Science and Engineering at the Technical University of Munich, with a focus on high-performance computing and computational fluid dynamics. During this time he worked as a research assistant with Prof. Dr. Lennart Hilbert at MPI-PKS Dresden and KIT Karlsruhe on the computational modeling of chromatin structure.

For his Master’s thesis, Tommaso joined the MOSAIC Group, working under the supervision of Dr. Pietro Incardona and Prof. Dr. Ivo F. Sbalzarini to develop a dynamic sparse-grid data structure for GPUs, obtaining his M.Sc. degree in 2019. The results of this work have also been published and presented at the International Supercomputing Conference in 2021.

For his doctoral work, Tommaso joined the group of Dr. Christoph Zechner at the Center for Systems Biology Dresden, where he focused on stochastic modeling and approximation techniques for chemical reaction networks and population models. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the Dresden University of Technology in 2025, with his thesis titled “Moment approximation techniques for compartmentalised stochastic reaction networks”.

In the MOSAIC Group, Tommaso is developing novel methods for approximating integrals in high dimensions and on deformable surfaces and with respect to time-dependent measures.
